A fit test is a test protocol conducted to verify that an air-purifying respirator is both comfortable and correctly fits the user. Fit testing uses a test agent, either qualitatively detected by the wearer’s sense of taste, smell, or involuntary cough (irritant smoke) or quantitatively measured by an instrument, to verify the respirator’s fit. Fit testing is required to be repeated every two years, or when there’s a change in ones physical condition, such as obvious weight gain/loss or if there is a change in facial features.
If you are required to wear an air-purifying respirator while during your work or study, and have not received fit testing in the last two years, please contact your supervisor and the EHS Office (Elaine Osmond, EHS Tehcnician/elaine.osmond@dal.ca) to schedule an appointment.
