Back in May, my fellow DPMG colleges and I visited the Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre located in the heart of Truro’s Power Centre to learn more about the Mi’kmaq First Nations people.

Garrett Gloade, is a youth mentor of the Millbrook First Nations and assisted in the forming of Iron Tide singers, which he’s also member of. Garrett happily introduced the importance of the drum and songs of the Mi’kmaq culture to our group.

“The drum is a significant importance of first Nation because it represents unity, no matter who the person is or where they come from, they’re always invited to the drum - no matter where they are in life. The drum symbolizes the heartbeat of mother earth, as well as, the circle of life. Every song is a prayer, prayers that heal.”

Through an interactive facility tour, team building activity and observation of a cultural drum ceremonial tale, our group quickly became inspired and more knowledgeable of the rich and historic Mi’kmaq culture and very grateful for the learning experience. Thank you Garrett!
