Upgrading Options


If you would like to apply to Dalhousie, but do not meet our general entrance requirements, you may be able to take upgrading courses to become eligible.

Dalhousie University recognizes a broad range of courses that can be used in place of a high school course. Below is a list of some of the commonly used institutions/courses for upgrading. This is not an exhaustive list of all options or acceptable courses from each institution. If you have questions about other options or courses please contact an advisor.

If you are an applicant who self-identifies as Black or Aboriginal you may be eligible for the Transition Year Program (TYP), which is a pathway to undergraduate study at Dalhousie. 

Acadia University

Open University Pre-University Math 0110: equivalent to Academic Math 12

Open University Advanced Pre-University Math 0120: equivalent to Pre-Calculus 12

Dalhousie University – College of Continuing Education (Halifax)

Dalhousie's College of Continuing Education offers several University Preparatory courses. For more information about these courses please visit their website

Dalhousie University – Faculty of Agriculture (Extended Learning)

CHMA 0050: equivalent to Chemistry 12

PHYS 0050: equivalent to Physics 12

MTHA 0050: equivalent to Pre-Calculus 12

Saint Mary’s University

Writing Skills: equivalent to English 12

Pre-Calculus Math I & II: Together are equivalent to Pre-Calculus 12. Both portions must have final grades that meet Dalhousie’s program requirements

Online Biology 12: equivalent to Biology 12

Chemistry 12: equivalent to Chemistry 12

Physics Part I & II: Physics I is equivalent to Physics 11 and Physics II is equivalent to Physics 12

Pre-University Math is not consider to be equivalent to Academic Math 12

Nova Scotia Department of Education – Correspondence Studies Program

All courses taken through the NSDE – CSP are equivalent to a grade 12 in-class version.    

Virtual High School (Ontario)

All courses taken the VHS and coded 4M/4U are equivalent to a grade 12 in-class version.

Nova Scotia Community College

Courses equivalent to English 12: COMM 1041 or COMM 1100 or COMM 1000 or COMM 1001 or COMM 1205 & 2215 together (both courses must have final grades that meet Dalhousie’s admission requirements) or COMM 1227 & 1228 together (both courses must have final grades that meet Dalhousie’s admission requirements).

Courses equivalent to Academic Math 12: MATH 1046 & 1047 together (both courses must have final grades that meet Dalhousie’s admission requirements).

Courses equivalent to Pre-Calculus Math 12: MATH 1050, or MATH 1013 & 1023 together (both portions must have final grades that meet Dalhousie’s admission requirements).

Courses equivalent to Physics 12: PHYS 1046 or PHYS 1047

Courses equivalent to Chemistry 12: CHEM 1046 or CHEM 1050

Courses equivalent to Biology 12: BIOL 1046 or BIOL 1050
