What's in a name?

Do law students want change?

That seemed to be the message sent last week as students voted in a plebiscite sponsored by the Law Students Society about whether Dalhousie should consider changing the designation of its law degree from a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) to a Juris Doctor (JD). Almost 80 per cent of those who voted said they would prefer the JD designation, compared to only 10 per cent who said they preferred the LLB. Another 10 per cent did not express a preference. 307 students voted in the plebiscite, which represents 65.4 per cent of eligible voters.

Despite the strong result, the LSS is hesitant to interpret them as a mandate for the JD without further consultation with other key constituents, such as alumni.

“The LSS has a duty to uphold the interests of all its constituents, not simply the majority, however large,” said Gordon McGuire, president of LSS. “That being said, the results have made it known that this is an issue our students care about.”

Mr. McGuire plans to meet with the Dean and with Faculty Council in the next week to share the results and discuss their implications.

I wonder... would renaming the Dal law degree be retroactive ie. would my LLB become a JD? And would the higher-level law degrees (LLM, JSD) require a name change as well?

WHY DO THE ALUMNI GET SUCH A VOICE WHEN THEY CAN SIMPLY ELECT TO KEEP THEIR LLB OR CHANGE TO A JD. IT IS THE CURRENT STUDENTS WHO ARE STUCK WITH THE DECISION IF THE ADMINISTRATION STUBBORNLY (AND FOOLISHLY) CLINGS TO AN INCORRECT HISTORY. INCORRECT BECAUSE THE LLB IN ENGLAND ONLY REQUIRES A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA FOR ENTRY (WHO NEEDS OR WANTS A SECOND BACHELORS DEGREE - THIS DOES NOT FAIRLY REPRESENT THE STUDENTS' EFFORTS). THIS HISTORICAL MISTAKE HAS BEEN CORRECTED IN CANADA BY THE PHYSICIANS AS THEY NO LONGER GET AN MB (BACHELORS OF MEDICINE) BUT AN MD. INDEED, THE VERY FIRST DOCTORAL DEGREE - NEARLY 1000 YEARS AGO - WAS THE DOCTORATE FOR LAWYERS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA, IN ITALY!

Wouldn't that ruin the credibility of your J.D program.

Because of the lower entry requirements for the L.L.B program...

Maybe you should award the JD degree to students with 80 percent + on their L.L.B degree?
How does one change from an LL.B. to a JD?
