The Department of Oceanography shares the sad news of the passing of retired faculty member Dr. Jonathan Grant, who passed away on September 12, 2024, at the age of 69.
Dr. Grant was a respected oceanographer and educator at Dalhousie for over 30 years. He was the NSERC-Cooke Industrial Research Chair in Sustainable Aquaculture and a world leader in aquaculture science, publishing over 200 papers and supervising more than 50 graduate students.
Beyond his academic achievements, Jon was a devoted family man and outdoor enthusiast. He loved kayaking, hiking, and camping, passions he shared with his wife, Janet, and their children.
Dr. Grant’s warmth, humor, and love of life will be deeply missed by his family, friends, colleagues, and students around the world. A complete obituary is available online.
In lieu of a funeral, a celebration of his life will take place later this year in his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. Donations can be made in his memory to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.
