Tick Talk: Watch an EHS video on how to limit your risk of tick bites

Posted by Environmental Health and Safety on May 19, 2023 in General Announcements

Warmer weather means more time outside. It also means ticks are more active. Nova Scotia has 14 different species of ticks, although only a few species carry the necessary bacteria and viruses that cause tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease. The most notable is the blacklegged tick, often called the deer tick.

To help everyone be more tick-aware, Dalhousie’s Environmental Health and Safety Office has produced a short Safety Snippet video aimed at providing you the knowledge to limit your risk of tick bites and tick-borne illnesses.. This short video will give you tips on:

  • Where ticks are likely to be, and how to avoid those areas.

  • How to dress to avoid getting ticks on your skin.

  • How to safely remove a tick.

  • How to safely dispose of a tick.

For those looking to post information on items such as office bulletin boards, a one-page Safety Share document has also been produced.

Additional (external) resources on ticks can be found at the Nova Scotia tick safety website and at etick.ca.  If you are concerned about a tick bite, please contact your doctor or speak to a local pharmacist.
