Status update: Dalhousie Advanced Network Project

Posted by Information Technology Services on January 17, 2022 in General Announcements

The Dalhousie Advanced Network Project is modernizing the way you connect by implementing a secure, centrally controlled, and dynamically managed computer network. A new network will be rolled out across Dalhousie campuses and Kings College. The network will implement the latest technology using up to date best practices and industry standard solutions. The new network will continue to support the current and future needs of education and research by providing increased security and improved network capacity and accessibility.

Current Status

We are currently in the Construction Phase, which includes adding new devices into the existing network, configuring the identity/security policies for consistent user access and implementing automation tools to streamline network management. We are targeting a winter timeframe for the wired deployment and spring/summer 2022 for the wireless deployment.

Digital Strategy alignment

Dalhousie has developed a digital strategy to leverage an increasing digital world to positively impact our academic mission in research, teaching, service, student life, as well as in processes and systems in administrative and support functions, as a foundational support for all aspects of the University. The Dal Advanced Network Program is a Dalhousie initiative the aligns with the digital strategy by supporting our leadership in teaching and research by providing fast, secure and reliable communications.

Who will be affected by the Dal Advanced Network upgrade?

Everyone who connects to the new network including students, faculty, employees, and guests of Dalhousie campuses and King's College will connect to the new network and enjoy the benefits of enhanced security and an improved user experience.

What's changing? What do I need know?

For most of you, the changes to the network will happen behind the scenes and you will connect to the new network in much the same way as you do today. The new Dalhousie network will be rolled out using a phased approach.  This means that for a short period of time we will have two networks, our current network, "DAL-WPA2" and our new network. During the rollout, if you are in a building that has transitioned to the new network, you will connect to the new Dalhousie network. If you are in a building that has not yet transitioned to the new network, you will continue to connect to the current network “DAL-WPA2”.
