Job Posting: Course Builder (CLT/ATS)

Posted by Centre for Learning and Teaching on August 19, 2020 in Job Postings

Course builders are an integral part of Dalhousie University's response to moving courses online for the Fall term.  Course Builders will team up with Educational Developers at the Centre for Learning and Teaching (CLT) to support the faculty members in the development of their online courses. They will be expected to assist faculty in all departments, as required. They may also receive technical support from Academic Technology Services (ATS).

The course builder is responsible for working with faculty to assist them in the following tasks:

  • Assist faculty with the following instructional tools
    • Brightspace
    • Panopto
    • Collaborate Ultra
    • Campuspack
  • Setting up Homepage and Course Menu
  • Posting announcements (adding links to the other areas of the Brightspace course site or embedding videos)
  • Adding content (including creating modules, setting release dates, uploading files and organizing them in the Manage Files area, or adding links and videos and other Brightspace activities)
  • Setting up Quizzes
  • Setting up Assignments dropboxes
  • Putting rubrics online
  • Setting up gradebook
  • Configuring Discussion boards (including setting these up and organizing, restricting their access by student groups, attaching grade items to discussion topics, adding features like "must post first," grid view, timing and lock dates, etc.)
  • Setting up Groups (options for forming – so random or self-assigned or instructor-selected)
  • Managing dates and restrictions
  • Provide regular status updates and maintaining a work-log
  • Accessibility (review options for adding captions to videos, as needed and for accommodations)

Course Builders will not be required to develop content, quiz questions or assignments. The Educational Developer will support the Course Builder with any questions they have as they build out the course. When a course build is complete, a final review will be requested, with an Educational Developer in the Centre for Learning and Teaching.

This position is open to current Dalhousie students only. It allows up to 32.5 hours/week and starts as soon as possible.

If you are interested in applying, please send a resume to Kate Thompson (thompskm@dal.ca).
