OCCU 5007.03 Research Approaches for Occupational Therapists
Winter term 2018

Work Assignment:  The sessional instructor will be responsible for the delivery of OCCU 5007.03 (Research Approaches for Occupational Therapists) and for the evaluation of students in the winter term 2018.

This course introduces theories and epistemologies underlying positivist and naturalist (quantitative and qualitative) approaches to research, particularly focusing on the issues that arise for research on occupation and in occupational therapy. We explore tensions between objectivity and subjectivity, the value of standardized measures, insider/ outsider issues unique to clinician-researchers, concerns about inclusion/ exclusion, ethical issues in research, and particularly power concerns inherent in research. We examine the epistemological and methodological ‘fit’ of various research approaches with occupational therapy, asking how research may best move the profession forward. The focus in this course is on critical appraisal of the social, political, economic, and ethical matters that shape the research enterprise. The aim is to develop astute consumers and critics of scholarly research.

Requirements of position: PhD or Masters degree. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) preferred.

OCCU 6508.03 Chronic Conditions in Everyday Life   Winter term 2018

Department:    School of Occupational Therapy

Work Assignment:  The sessional instructor will be responsible for the distance education delivery of OCCU 6508.03 Chronic Conditions in Everyday Life in the School’s Post-Professional program. The instructor would be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including course preparation for distance delivery, lectures, test preparation and evaluation of students. In addition, the instructor should be available on-line for consultation with students.

This online course consists of an examination of substantive issues of concern related to chronic condition management. In this course students will critically analyze a range of issues including: contexts for care; models of chronic care; practice-based approaches; tools and intervention strategies; quality and safety; and organizational change.

Requirements of position: PhD or Masters degree. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) preferred. Web-based distance education technology preferred.  Experience in implementing and / or evaluating evidence for use in professional practice is an asset.

The instructor would be responsible for all aspects of teaching and administering the class, including course preparation for distance delivery, lectures, test preparation and evaluation of students. In addition, the instructor should be available on-line for consultation with students.

This online course focuses on older adults, their inclusion and participation in occupations (that is, the things they want to do, need to do, and are expected to do), and the continuing care policies and services that support their everyday lives.

Requirements of position: PhD or Masters degree. Previous teaching experience (especially with graduate students) preferred. Web-based distance education technology preferred.  Experience in implementing and / or evaluating evidence for use in professional practice is an asset.
