Develop the Core Competency of Communication

Communication is one of Dalhousie’s Core Competencies. Begin the New Year with a commitment to increase workplace communication skills. Skillsoft Online Learning has a great variety of courses on interpersonal communication, listening skills, writing skills and email.

Try doing a Skillsoft course together as a group. At your next team meeting consider doing a short course together or start the meeting with a video from Skillsoft on a relevant topic.

Some suggested Skillsoft courses for building communication competency are:

Communication Methods That Make Sense – and Make your Point (34 minutes)

Be a Better Listener (28 minutes)

Mastering Active Listening Skills in the Workplace (34 minutes)

Interpersonal Communication That Builds Trust (28 minutes)

Managing Your Email (1 hour)

Note: Skillsoft login required for above courses.   If you have misplaced your Skillsoft login credentials or require further information please contact talent.management@dal.ca.

Tips for leading Skillsoft Online Learning in a group setting:

  • Identify someone to facilitate the session.
  • The facilitator should review the course to familiarize themselves with the content and timing.
  • For questions or quick exercises within the course allow time for people to think of answers individually before getting the whole group to answer.
  • Consider pausing the course and adding in your own custom discussion question.
  • Depending on the size of the group any discussions questions can be done have in pairs, trios or quads before hearing the ideas in the larger group.
  • Consider doing only part of a course or just showing a video from a course.
