Posted by Faculty of Management on December 19, 2016 in Job Postings

The Rowe School of Business (RSB) invites applications for a five-year limited-term appointment as Director, commencing July 1, 2017 (negotiable). Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Management, the Director is responsible for strategic planning for the school, its enrollment, academic and executive programs, personnel and budget as well as its general administration. The Director is also a faculty member. As such, the successful candidate will teach one course, maintain a research portfolio, and demonstrate respect for and a strong ability to work with students and foster their success. Following this appointment, the Director may enter a career-stream faculty position within the RSB at a rank appropriate to his/her qualifications.

The RSB is an AACSB-accredited school with a strong research culture. It serves over 1600 students, and one which prides itself on developing the next generation of innovative leaders. It specializes in experiential learning including residencies, consulting projects, co-op work terms, internships and new venture creation. Collaboration with our employer partners from across Canada brings opportunity to our students and relevancy to our programs (the Bachelor of Commerce Co-op, Bachelor of Management, Corporate Residency MBA, Blended/Online MBA in Financial Services or Leadership and Executive Education programs). The RSB is part of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University, one of Canada’s U15 group of leading research-oriented universities. Dalhousie is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a city known for its great quality of life.

The ideal candidate for the role of Director will have a PhD or equivalent and will exhibit the following skills and characteristics:

Proven Leadership Skills. The successful applicant will be a dynamic and visionary leader who has demonstrated collaborative leadership skills in a complex and rapidly changing environment. The individual will be an ethical, transformational leader who is dedicated to building a strong culture of teaching and research, and a person who is committed to advancing a diverse and inclusive environment for students, staff and faculty. We seek a leader who can motivate, inspire and mobilize others to achieve results.

Strategic Approach to Planning. The successful applicant must be a strong strategic planner who will elucidate a compelling vision for the RSB and align research and teaching initiatives in order to realize that vision. Knowledge and understanding of the competitive environment and the issues, risks, trends, and opportunities facing business schools both nationally and globally is required. This position is ideal for a candidate who can identify untapped opportunities and set priorities among strategically important projects, and who has experience fostering change and growth.

Business Expertise. We seek an individual who has comprehensive knowledge of today’s business environment as demonstrated through industry experience or in-depth research into contemporary business practice. She/he will also be knowledgeable about trends within undergraduate and graduate commerce, management and business programs; about curriculum design; and about academic planning and developing new program initiatives. The ability to guide experiential and work-integrated learning is viewed as an asset for those applying for the role.

People Management and Administrative Skills. It is a requirement that applicants have proven management and administrative expertise including budget management in a complex academic environment. Having experience as a Department Chair or Associate Dean would be an asset. A record of generating new revenue streams, working closely with development staff and stewarding donor gifts will be viewed as desirable experience.

Advocate and Strong Communicator. The RSB has high aspirations; therefore, we are seeking a candidate who can bolster the school’s reputation--within the university, among the U15, and in the greater business community. The Director should come to the role with a strong network (regional, national and international) and be committed to developing relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Having experience communicating using social media would be an asset.
