Supporting Students in Dominica after Tropical Storm Erika

Posted by Faculty of Agriculture on October 21, 2015 in General Announcements

In the wake of Tropical Storm Erika, Dominica is badly feeling the effects of the devastation which wrecked bridges, buildings, villages and has left a reconstruction bill worth half of the country’s annual GDP. Torrential rain fell in the span of just a few hours, turning rivers into torrents and hillsides into deadly mudslides. The capital Roseau was engulfed by water and the island’s main airport will cost over $15m USD to repair.

Dominica State College, a partner of Dalhousie University, Faculty of Agriculture weathered through the storm with little damage, however many of its students had their livelihoods destroyed and have been left to put their lives and homes together again.

In an effort to contribute to the healing process, Dalhousie University, Faculty of Agriculture International Office has provided a donation to Dominica State College to purchase school supplies and the necessary items for students to continue their education uninterrupted.

DSC and Dal AC will continue their efforts on the CEFE Project www.dal.ca/cefe and look forward to the launch of their new Agri-Business Entrepreneurship Program in January 2016.
