Tigers weekend recap (Nov. 30‑Dec. 2)

Women’s Basketball
UPEI 73 @ DAL 76

Currently tied for second place in the AUS standings, the Tigers hosted UPEI over the weekend in an exciting match at Dalplex. With both teams battling back and forth from the start, it came down to the wire with ten seconds left as Tessa Stammberger drained a basket for three to take the game 76-73. Player of the game honors went to Keisha Brown who scored 34 points.  

Men’s Basketball
UPEI 74 @ DAL 73

Basketball fans were in for an equally exciting men’s match on Saturday following the women’s game. Coming out strong in the first half, Dal took the initial lead, but was challenged by a determined Panthers team who held their ground. Tied in the final minute of the game, a three pointer put UPEI ahead, only to have Dal’s Devon Stedman make two free throws, closing the gap to one point. Unfortunately the clock ran out and the Tigers lost a heartbreaker 74-73.

Women’s Hockey
UPEI 2 @ DAL 1; MtA 5 @ DAL 2

Over the weekend the women were in Halifax for two last home games before the holiday break. On Saturday the showdown between the Tigers and the Panthers continued on the ice in a close game at the Metro Centre. Dal matched their opponents in shots on net, but a power play goal near the end of the first period gave UPEI the edge they needed to take the game 2-1. The following day the black and gold hosted MtA in a tough match. Elena Tsitouras scored her second goal of the weekend to keep the Tigers in the fight, but it wasn’t enough to stop the Mounties from taking it 5-2.           

Men’s Hockey
UNB 5 @ DAL 2; UPEI 2 @ DAL 3

On Friday night the Tigers faced off against a tough UNB team at the Forum. The men started off strong with Jacob Johnston scoring a power play goal in the first period to take the lead. Three consecutive goals by the Varsity Reds gave them the momentum and left Dal trying to field a comeback. In the end the visitors took it 5-2. Up next on Saturday Dal hosted the Panthers. Once again striking first, the Tigers took the lead early, but found themselves down 2-1 after the second period. Dal was determined to come out on top however and they came out flying in the third period with goals by Jacob Johnston and Ben Breault. With a 3-2 victory, Dal closed the gap in the standings and now sit only one point behind UPEI.
