Back to business

- March 22, 2007

The Killam library building was open for business first thing Thursday morning, after a small fire broke out in a basement transformer Wednesday night. Facilities Management staff, Security and the fire department responded immediately and cooperatively to contain the fire, evacuate the building and get all library functions up and running.

Peter Howitt, of Facilities Management, says the fire broke out in the transformer that powers larger equipment, like fans and the ventilation system.

"We very rarely have failures with transformers, so we are investigating to see what caused the problem," he said.

Work on the building was completed by about 1 a.m. on Thursday.

A new transformer has been ordered. In the meantime, power has been restored to the building with the help of a generator, and it is business as usual in the Killam.
