Distinguished honours

The Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. Raymond LeBlanc was given the prestigious honourary degree of Doctorate in Medical Sciences from the University of Moncton in June. Dr. LeBlanc has been an active player on the national and international scene with a variety of organizations including the Canadian Ophthalmological Society, the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, the Royal College of Physicians and surgeons, the International Perimetry Society, the French Glaucoma Society, the Canadian Glaucoma Society, the American Glaucoma Society, and the International Congress of Ophthalmology Glaucoma Society.  He was also named as a Member of the Order of Canada in November 2005.

In other news from the department, Dr. Jack Quigley was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Canadian Ophthalmological Society's Annual Meeting in June in Toronto. This award is presented to individuals who have made a sustained impact nationally and internationally to the growth of the profession and who have maintained the highest standard of patient care in their practice. Recipients of this award have also been strong and
positive role models in the community and exemplary mentors and educators.

Jack Quigley was born and educated in Halifax, graduating from medical school in 1951. After subsequent training in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto, Dr. Quigley practiced in Beverly Hills, California returning to Halifax shortly after. Dr. Quigley spearheaded the organization and development of academic ophthalmology in Halifax and was the head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Halifax Infirmary during the 1970s.
