2020/2021 Clinical Educator Award Recipients
CLINICAL EDUCATORS IMPACT LIVES
Faculty took a moment to congratulate Steve Richey who has been chosen for the Dalhousie University, School of Physiotherapy Clinical Education Award.
Steve Richy was nominated by students who were fortunate to have such a clinical educator as a mentor for a ten-week period at the Spryfield Medical Clinic in 2020. Steve created a rich environment for the clinical practice experience and offered endless opportunities for learning while playing an active role in the exchange of ideas and experiences.
The students wrote of Steve:
"We would like to nominate our Clinical Instructor Steve Richey to be recognized for excellence in facilitating student learning. Our placement with the Spryfield Medical Clinic was a unique, and innovative experience. During the placement, there were times of uncertainty and times of success. Steve was a guiding presence for us throughout the entire process. Steve put in more hours than we could have expected, sparked spirited conversation and educated us daily. When it came time to care for patients, Steve was always there to guide our thought process. A major reason that we were so dedicated to the project was because Steve assured us from the start that it was meaningful and important for the future of Physiotherapy. With his guidance, we learned that inspiration can yield concrete results and growth. We thank you for taking our nomination into consideration for this award."

Joni (Snair) was not only one of the best physiotherapists I have had the pleasure to work with, but she also went out of her way to make sure I got an excellent learning experience.

I had the pleasure to have my Neurotherapeutics placement at Northwoodcare, which is a long-term care facility located in the Northend of Halifax. I was very fortunate to be taught by Joni Snair, who is one of two physiotherapists that are part of the Northwoodcare team. Joni was not only one of the best physiotherapists I have had the pleasure to work with, but she also went out of her way to make sure I got an excellent learning experience. As a student, where my priority was to get as much learning and practical hands-on experience from my placement as possible, Joni made sure that I was thrown in the “deep-end” from the very first week. I later appreciated her approach in teaching as it helped me find my confidence that I am capable to help the residents of Northwoodcare, and Joni made sure I was comfortable in every patient case I was involved in.
During my 6-weeks, I had the fantastic opportunity to co-lead new innovative programs into Northwoodcare, such as a seated boxing program and using virtual reality with residents. I saw a broad range of conditions during my placement, from strokes and Parkinson’s Disease, to Huntington’s Disease and Cerebral Palsy. I also had the opportunity to work with a handful of visually or hearing impaired residents too. In fact, one day I was “put in their shoes” where I was going throughout my usual day but wearing these duct-taped glasses to imitate me being visually impaired. I noted a few areas of improvement in terms of making the facility more accessible, and had a meeting with the Innovation Director to share my findings with her. This is one of many fun and engaging learning opportunities I had the privilege to be part of during my placement.
All in all, by the end of the 6-weeks, I have built a strong and founded experience working in Neurotherapeatics in a long-term care facility. Northwoodcare was a fantastic facility to have a placement in as there is a need for an extra set of hands, and the residents and staff are all very welcoming and friendly. Joni was also an outstanding clinical teacher who respected my input and taught me so much on how to be a memorable, empathetic, evidence-based, outside-of-the-box therapist. It was quite difficult to say farewell by the end of the placement. I hope our paths cross again in the near future.
