Designed by and for EHS professionals, The Certificate in Emergency Health Services Management (CEHSM) develops the management skills essential for work in this sector. It is geared towards those who are leading, or who aspire to lead, in EHS, and it is a great way for aspiring professionals to demonstrate their commitment to career progression.  While many other programs are limited to a particular sector, with a narrow focus on firefighting, or paramedecine, we take the systems-level view that is essential to effective emergency management.  

More specifically, this certificate aims to help participants:

  • develop effective community-based programs, specifically through adverse outcome reduction
  • develop program-based budget and accounting controls
  • formulate effective communication and awareness at the community level.

Our participants progress to roles in Emergency & Disaster Planning, Emergency Health Services, and Management Agencies.

Prepare for further, flexible development options: Once you've completed the CEHSM, you may choose to pursue the sister program: the Certificate in Emergency Health System Planning (CEHSP).  This would leave you with just four further courses to achieve your Diploma in Emgergency Health Services Management (DEHSM).   It's also a great way to prepare yourself for the Master of Health Administration (MHA).

Curriculum

The one-year certificate features both academic and results-oriented curriculum.  Students accepted into the Certificate in Emergency Health Services Management (CEHSM) take the following half credit classes:

  • Fall Semester - Required Course
    HESA 4005 - Healthcare Financial Management

  • Winter Semester - Required Course
    HESA 4020 - Quality Improvement in Emergency Medical Services

  • Summer Semester - Required Course
    HESA 4040 – Principles of Public Relations and Marketing in Emergency Medical Services

Program Delivery

The Certificate in Emergency Health Services Management (CEHSM) is fully online and fully flexible, but with an instructor always on hand to help. The certificate is conducted through Dalhousie's e-Learning platform, Brightspace, a well-established suite of tools which allow you undertake reading, view recordings and complete work when you wish, whilst also participating in group discussion with your fellow participants.

Admission Requirements

You must meet the Dalhousie University undergraduate admission requirements to be considered for this program. This certificate program does not typically accept people applying directly from high school. It is recommended that you have work or volunteer experience in the health services industry before applying for the program.

A complete application consists of the following documents:

  • A completed application form and fee
  • An official transcript of the record of academic work completed to date
  • One letter of reference (academic or professional)
  • Resume/curriculum vitae
  • TOEFL (international applications)

Application deadlines are:

  • March 1 for September start
  • November 15 for January start
  • March 15 for May start
