Degree Options

Major in Spanish

In addition to the general degree requirements, students need a minimum of 36 credit hours, a maximum of 54 credit hours in Spanish. At least 18 of these credit hours must be at the 3000 level or higher.

Requirements:

  • SPAN 2022.03: Advanced Intermediate Spanish
  • SPAN 3020.03: Translation
  • SPAN 3035.03: Advanced Spanish I
  • SPAN 3036.03: Advanced Spanish II
  • Six credit hours in Spanish or Spanish-American Literature (3000 level or higher)
  • Six credit hours of Spanish Civilization, Spanish-American Civilization or Hispanic Culture (this includes SPAN 2100SPAN 2105, Span 2110, SPAN 2150SPAN 2155SPAN 2200, Span 3410, Span 3450, Span 3515).
  • Six additional credit hours of Spanish (including three credit hours at the 3000 level or higher).

Double Major in Spanish

  • n addition to the general degree requirements, students need a combination of 60 credit hours, with a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 48 credit hours in Spanish. At least 18 of these credit hours must be at the 3000 level or higher.

Honours

  • Potential Honours applicants are encouraged to consult the Department's Undergraduate Advisor during their second year of study. Deadline for application should be three semesters before your graduation.
  • Students must meet the Faculty degree requirements which include a minimum of 54 and a maximum of 66 credit hours beyond the 1000 level in Spanish, including 18 credit hours at the 3000 level or higher.

  • SPAN 4980.03: Honours Reading Class. Student must complete an Honours Thesis in Spanish (Thesis proposal guidelines)
  • 21 additional credit hours in Spanish

Combined Honours

SStudents must meet the Faculty degree requirements which include a minimum of 66 and a maximum of 84 credit hours beyond the 1000 level in two allied subjects. A minimum of 30 and a maximum of 48 credit hours may be completed in each subject, including 18 credit hours beyond the 2000 level in each.

If Spanish is your primary major, a minimum of 36 credit hours in Spanish is required (including an honour's thesis).

Minors

Spanish

This minor is available to students registered in a 120 credit hour Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Community Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Informatics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) program.

A BA (90 credit hour) degree program with a minor in Spanish is also available.

Students must complete a minimum of 18 to a maximum of 27 credit hours above the 1000 level.

Requirements:

Latin American Studies

This minor is available to students registered in a 120 credit hour Bachelor of Applied Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Community Design, Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Informatics, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) program.

Requirements

Students seeking a minor in Latin American Studies must complete a minimum of 24 to a maximum of 27 credit hours, including a minimum of 3 credit hours at the 3000 level or above.

Certificate in Spanish Language and Culture 

Spanish Language and Culture

The CERTIFICATE IN SPANISH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE is available as both a concurrent and a stand-alone credential. It is open to all currently registered Dalhousie and King’s students across faculties, as well as to members of the broader community.

This 15 credit-hour certificate offers a structured and flexible pathway to develop Spanish language proficiency and cultural understanding. Through a progression of courses, students advance from introductory to intermediate or from intermediate to advanced levels, achieving at least a B1.2 level under the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

For BA students fulfilling a language requirement with Spanish courses, only nine additional credit hours are required to complete the Certificate. Students in other programs also benefit from the program’s accessibility, as 1000-level Spanish courses count toward the Certificate, unlike in a Minor.

Requirements:

To achieve the certificate, students must complete a total of 15 credit hours, including 12 credit hours from the language courses and 3 credit hours from the culture courses
