Some advice on language learning from the Office of Official Languages:

  • Take 10 minutes (coffee?) with a French-speaking colleague and outline your plans for the week end OR, after the weekend describe how you spent it.
    Listen to the news in one language at breakfast and switch to the other one at lunch or later in the day.
  • Watch a hockey or baseball game in French.
  • Take a cooking course in French.
  • Go and watch a movie in French.
  • Choose a French version for your next DVD or VHS rental.
  • Read the newspaper in French.
  • Buy a French recipe book for children and practice with a friend on the  weekend.
  • Listen to the radio chat shows in French: listen for the regional accents.
  • Subscribe to one French-language magazine.
  • Play Scrabble in French.
  • Attend a wine-tasting event in French.
  • Keep a French-language CD in the car or MP3 player as you go to and from  work.
  • Trade French-language lessons with someone in your area who wants to practice their English.
  • At home and in the grocery store, compare the French and English on the  labels.
  • Find a French-language email pen pal.
  • Pick up a weekend French-language newspaper.
