Studio Course: Teaching & Learning for Global Impact: Internationalization ‑Intersecting with Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

 

This course will focus on pedagogy for intercultural competency and internationalization through frameworks of Intercultural Teaching Competence (Dimitrov & Haque, 2016) and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Gloria Ladson-Billings, 1994). The course is intended for interested faculty members, as they discover these frameworks through discussions and meaningful interactions. The course aims to help the faculty start planning the implementation of practical strategies to internationalize and to make their pedagogy culturally responsive for their courses, including COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) projects.

Duration

The course will run for 6 weeks from February 5–March 22, 2024.

  • Session 1: Week 1-In person in Truro (Friday, February 9)
  • Session 2: Week 3-Online (Tuesday, February 20)
  • Session 3: Week 5-Online Drop-in/Individual consultation on syllabus, etc. (Tuesday, March 5)
  • Session 4: Week 6-In person in Truro (Friday, March 22)

Day/Time

Online sessions: Tuesdays at 2:30–4:30 p.m. and in person sessions: Fridays at 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

  1. Intercultural Competency for Teaching
    • Theoretical/ Pedagogical framework: ITC
  2. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy
    • Theoretical/ Pedagogical framework: CRP
  3. Internationalization for Online Courses
    • Theoretical/ Pedagogical framework: COIL

Virtual Platform

The course will be set up on Teams and course participants will be able to access the platform on February 5 before the first in person session on February 8.

Course Engagement

  • Expected time to be spent: 12-18 hours depending on your personal schedule
  • Readings x3

  • Final reflection paper/presentation 500-700 words
  • Showcase presentation to Dal community. CLT hosts the showcase of willing/selected course participants

Registration

Registration is limited to 19 seats. Faculty of Agriculture, instructors and administration (15); Teaching Fellows (2); and CUTL Participants (2). Once you have successfully submitted the registration form, you will receive an email receipt. Please note, seats are available on a first come first serve basis and your seat is not confirmed until you have received an official confirmation email. People on the waitlist will be contacted if a spot becomes available.

Is this course for me?

  • Yes, you can. Two spots in the course have been opened for Teaching Fellows who are actively engaged in teaching or assisting in teaching courses.

Can I take this course? I am a graduate student at the FoA enrolled in ‘Certificate in University Teaching & Learning (CUTL).

  • Yes, you can. Two spots in the course have been opened for graduate students who are already registered in the certificate in teaching and learning (graduate students).

When will the course be delivered?

  • The course will be delivered from February 5-March 22, for 6 weeks.

What will be the mode of course delivery?

  • The course will be delivered both in person and online with mostly asynchronous activities and tasks. In person sessions will be held on Fridays, on Truro campus.
  • Two synchronous sessions will be held on Tuesdays in weeks 3 and 5 for two hours with dedicated time to discussions and questions about the topic.

How much time/week do I have to spare for the course?

  • You are expected to be spending 2-3 hours in a week (12-18 hours/course) on the course content and activities. Course participants may spend more or less time based on their personal schedules.

What technological tools will be used?

  • The main course space will be created on Teams.

What are expected tasks and activities during the week?

  • Readings x3 and Discussion forum for engaged interaction x 3
  • Final reflection paper/presentation 500-700 words
  • One showcase of learning/implementation presentation to Dal community. CLT hosts the showcase of willing/selected course participants.
  • Course feedback survey (post-course)

How will I be assessed?

  • There is no assessment for course participants except for those who are taking the course as part of the Faculty Certificate in Teaching and Learning and for those who are taking the course as part of Certificate in University Teaching and Learning (Graduate Students)
  • Attendance, reading, and participation in discussions.
  • Reflection submission
  • Project: Application of internationalized/intercultural pedagogy

Does the course have grades?

  • No, there is no grading for the course. This is a participation-based course. Completion of activities, attendance of sessions, and submission of reflection is mandatory. There is something to learn from the course for everyone, and that is what success in teaching and learning is about.
