A passion for spirits and community
Jaime Landry (BMgmt’23) is the dynamic owner of Black Harbour Distillers, a thriving spirits manufacturing business based in Hubbards, Nova Scotia. Since graduating from Dalhousie with a Bachelor of Management (BMgmt) in 2023, Landry has combined entrepreneurial drive with a strong commitment to giving back to Dal.
Mentoring the next generation
Landry has volunteered at Dalhousie for one year, focusing on mentoring students and supporting budding entrepreneurs. She dedicates much of her time to the Dalhousie Management Society, a student-led society that is committed to enhancing the lives of BMgmt and Bachelor of Science Recreation/Bachelor of Management (BSc(Rec)/BMgmt) students. The society offers an array of academic, charitable, athletic and social events specifically suited to the interest of all BMgmt students.
Landry has also participated in a Women’s Day panel, where she inspired young women interested in business to pursue their passions in male-dominated fields. She gave valuable advice and insight on how those in the BMgmt program could create their own businesses and be successful. Female students could relate to her being a recent graduate, and she motivated them to maintain their drive to achieve their dreams.
Why volunteer?
Landry’s inspiration to become a Dalhousie volunteer stems from her time as a student. “The positive experience I had when attending Dal inspired me to help out in any way I could give back,” she explains.
What has she gained?
Through volunteering, Landry has been continually impressed by the creativity and intelligence of Dalhousie students. “I learned how inspiring and smart students are—there are some really creative ideas out there. Sometimes people just need someone to talk to for another perspective,” she says.
A memorable moment
One of Landry’s most memorable experiences as a Dalhousie volunteer happened during a panel discussion. “One evening I was hosting a panel for entrepreneurs. When we started, there was a group of students in the classroom who were studying. They stopped their studies and stayed for the panel. They were very engaged and so grateful for the opportunity,” she recalls. This unexpected conversation highlighted the impact that mentorship and open dialogue can have on students.
Advice for prospective volunteers
Landry encourages others to get involved: “It’s not much of a time commitment at all and feels great to connect and help. Most likely, you will learn something too!”
Landry exemplifies the spirit of Dalhousie alumni who combine entrepreneurial ambition with a strong commitment to community and mentorship. Her journey from a curious student to a thriving business owner and advocate continues to inspire many.
Landry’s story is also testament to the power of community, mentorship, and lifelong learning.
