SSW Student Group

The student group is the student society for the School of Social Work and everyone is a part of the student group just by being a social work student. The student group is your way to become involved in our social work community outside of academic classes. Our purpose is to bring students together to build a sense of community, and reach out to the greater community as well. The student group keeps the students informed as it opens communication among the students, the school, and the community. It also creates networking contacts which will be useful to you throughout your career, as a large part of social work practice involves networking with other organizations.

Activities

The student group incorporates different aspects of a social work student’s life including community action, socializing, and education. A few of the activities that were carried out last year included potlucks, social nights, karaoke, Halloween bowling, movies, a clothing drive, fundraisers and suicide intervention training. We also sponsored a large family at Christmas and headed a letter writing campaign to act for change.

Meetings

The student group meets every two weeks throughout the school year and the first meeting is scheduled during orientation. There are many ways to become involved in student group. You can bring your ideas and skills to the meetings as they are open to all social work students. There are also different positions that we will need to fill early in September. These are positions that will enable communication between the student group and other committees and associations, such as the Nova Scotia Association of Social Workers (NSASW), the Canadian Association for Schools of Social Work Education (CASWE), and Diversity and Equality, just to name a few.
