Dr Drew Bourret

Dr. Drew Bourret is originally from Thunder Bay, Ontario, and after completing an Honours Bachelor undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences from Western University, and a Master’s of Science in PT from the University of Toronto, he was awarded a Doctorate of Science in PT and became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physiotherapy (FCAMPT).
 
Having worked clinically in musculoskeletal and orthopaedics for nearly a decade including several Canadian provinces and New Zealand, Drew contributes a wide range of clinical skills and experiences. He has a passion for working with students and teaching, with a particular focus on critical thinking and evidence-based practice. Other interests include adventure world travel, martial arts (Muay Thai), graphic novels, and a love of learning.

After completing her Physiotherapy degree in 2005, Kate began her physiotherapy career in Edmonton, Alberta. A few years later, she returned to the Maritimes to be closer to home and family and began working as a physiotherapist at the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) in Halifax. Kate has worked clinically in orthopaedics, neurotherapeutics, cardiorespiratory and general medicine. Her experience has spanned acute to rehab settings, and in-home treatments in the community. While working for the NSHA, Kate also worked as a part-time Clinical Lab Instructor at the Dalhousie University School of Physiotherapy and delivered care in several clinical research trials through Dalhousie University.

Kate returned to post-graduate studies in education and completed her Professional Master of Education (PME) from Queen’s University in 2019. Since then, Kate has been a full-time instructor at the Dalhousie School of Physiotherapy where she leads or participates in multiple MScPT courses and committees.

Kate has always been highly active in her community both personally and professionally. She serves on many volunteer committees for CPA, CCPUP, and PEAC and held a three-year term on the CPA Board of Directors. Kate was also a Board Member of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association (NSPA) from 2009-14, including a term as President from 2010-13. A strong proponent of lifelong learning, Kate continues to complete professional development courses; locally, nationally, and internationally.

In her off time, Kate enjoys spending time with colleagues, friends, and family, especially her dog Lily. One of her favorite places to spend time is her family cottage on the Bay of Fundy.

Barbara Kelly

Barbara Kelly works as a senior clinical instructor within the School of Physiotherapy contributing her expertise and experience to the labs, lectures and tutorials for both first and second year students. In addition, she works clinically and in research at the IWK specializing in paediatric neurology.

Barbara received her Diploma in Physiotherapy from University College of Dublin, Ireland then went on to earn both her Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy and MSc Rehabilitation Research from Dalhousie University.

Ms. Kelly is a dedicated educator and clinician and over the years has been extensively involved in the community including chairing the Paediatric Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. She currently sits on the Board of Halifax Dance and on the Board of the Nova Scotia College of Physiotherapists.

Laura McCrossin is a clinical instructor with the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University who has a passion for health promotion, teaching, oncology, and wounds and burns. Laura has worked in numerous clinical settings in Nova Scotia, Alberta, and internationally since graduating from the Dalhousie School of Physiotherapy in 2004. Her experience as a member of the burns/wound care team at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, AB led her to complete a Master of Clinical Science in Wound Healing through Western University in 2013. During her studies at Western, Laura was involved in research pertaining to the role of exercise in chronic lower leg ulcers. In addition to being a casual physiotherapist with the Nova Scotia Health Authority in Halifax, Laura has recently completed her certification in cancer rehabilitation and is also a certified lymphedema therapist.

Dr. Jennifer McPhee is a career stream instructor with the School of Physiotherapy. After completing a PhD. in 1999 at Dalhousie University in Pharmacology, she obtained her BSc in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie in 2001. After graduation, she worked for 20 years with the Nova Scotia Health Authority (NSHA) as a Physiotherapist. Her primary clinical practice areas included: acute care, ICU and seniors’ health.

During her time at NSHA she was actively involved in accreditation, quality care advisory teams, falls management programs and physiotherapy professional advisory committees. Jennifer has been a past board member of the Nova Scotia Collage of Physiotherapists (NSCP) and is currently a member of the NSCP Complaints Investigation Committee.

Prior to joining the School of Physiotherapy as an instructor, Jennifer was an Adjunct Professor with the school for 12 years. She provided guest lectures on pharmacology to highlight the importance of why Physiotherapists need an understanding of medications in order to practice safely and effectively. 
Daphne Pereira

Daphne has a vision of expanding the scope of PT practice to include advanced clinical skills in cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. She is enthusiastic about enriching physiotherapy clinical education experience for first year students through the use of simulated learning with task trainers and high fidelity human patient manikins.
 
Daphne graduated as a physiotherapist in the year of the millennium and has experience in clinical, academic and administrative fields. Her research work involved measurement of the Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) with a Doppler in patients with peripheral arterial disorders. Daphne has worked the entire spectrum of intensive care units: cardiovascular, pulmonary, neonatal, general medical/surgical, oncology, burns and emergency units.
 
She is passionate about promoting prophylactic medicine and has been involved in educating community members on heart health and early intervention as a Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor through the American Heart Association.
Stephen Richey

Stephen, originally from New Glasgow, NS, completed his Bachelor in Kinesiology at Acadia University in 2007 and MSc. in Physiotherapy at Dalhousie in 2009. Following graduation, Stephen worked primarily in private orthopaedics, eventually taking on a role as a clinic manager. In addition to his clinic work, Stephen has worked as a student therapist for the Acadia University Men's Football Team, and Dalhousie Men's Lacrosse team, as well as event coverage for the FIVB Beach Volleyball Junior World Championships, Soccer Nova Scotia, and Basketball Nova Scotia. In 2012, Stephen started his own business, providing private community-based, in-home physiotherapy, an area in which he continues to work. This has given Stephen experience in all areas of physiotherapy, particularly working with older adults.

In addition to his clinical work, Stephen is engaged within the profession. Stephen has had a number of roles including President of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association, Chair of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Advisory Group, and Chair of the Branch President's Forum of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association, as well as contributing to the written component of the Physiotherapy Competency Exam. Most recently, Stephen has completed a Master's in Education in Curriculum Planning for Health Interprofessionals through Acadia University furthering an interest in physiotherapy education.

Erin Samchyk

Originally from Jordan, Ontario, Erin completed her Honors Specialization BA in Kinesiology at the University of Western Ontario followed by her Masters of Science Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University. Clinically, Erin has diverse experience working in both adult and pediatric rehab, acute care, and private practice clinical settings with a particular focus in orthopedics/sport medicine, pediatric neurotherapeutics, clinical education and teaching.  

With a drive to pursue specialized clinical skills, Erin also holds a Certificate in Sport Physiotherapy and has had the opportunity to work as a team therapist and host medical team member for many national and international sporting events, including the CHL Memorial Cup and the 2023 Canada Games. She is a member of the Sport Physiotherapy Canada - Nova Scotia Executive and continues to work as a physiotherapist with the IWK Children’s Hospital and Nova Scotia Health, as well as providing sport physiotherapy coverage.
