JBI Aligning Health and Evidence for Transformative Change at Dalhousie University is pleased to offer the 2027 JBI Comprehensive Systematic Review Training Program (CSRTP), in collaboration with the JBI University of New Brunswick Nursing Research Centre. This intensive five-day program prepares health sciences researchers, clinicians, librarians, graduate students, and others involved in quality and practice portfolios to develop, conduct, and report systematic reviews.

This activity-driven program employs rigorous methods and tools to evaluate and synthesize evidence from research literature and documentary sources. Participants will gain practical experience in developing a systematic review protocol, including formulating review questions and planning the processes for searching, retrieving, and selecting evidence. They will critically appraise examples of quantitative and qualitative research, as well as text and opinion sources, and be introduced to JBI SUMARI software for conducting meta-analysis and meta-synthesis. Participants will also explore the nature of evidence and its role in informing healthcare practice.

Date & Format

The 2027 CSRTP will be held on five Fridays—April 30 and May 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2027—from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Atlantic Time (Halifax).

The program is delivered live online by JBI Certified Instructors and combines instructional sessions with interactive group activities. Sessions will not be recorded for future viewing. Time for lunch and short breaks will be scheduled between sessions.

Course Content

  • Module 1: Introduction to Evidence-Based Healthcare and the Systematic Review of Evidence (day 1)
  • Module 2: The Systematic Review of Evidence Generated through Quantitative Research (days 2 and 3)
  • Module 3: The Systematic Review of Evidence Generated by Qualitative Research, Narrative and Text (days 4 and 5)

Participants will learn to:

  • Use JBI software tools to draft a systematic review protocol, including identifying a question, searching, selecting, and retrieving research for the review.
  • Critically appraise examples of quantitative and qualitative research, as well as text and opinion sources, as part of the review process.
  • Use JBI software to perform a meta-analysis and meta-synthesis of selected studies.

  • Overview of Knowledge to Action
  • Overview of Evidence-Based Practice
  • Designing Protocols for Systematic Review
  • Systematic Review of Quantitative Evidence
  • Systematic Review of Qualitative Evidence
  • Systematic Review of Text and Opinion
  • Introduction to Mixed Methods Systematic Reviews, Scoping Reviews, and Umbrella Reviews

Certification

Full attendance across all five training days is required to qualify for JBI Reviewer Certification. Participants are also expected to present a systematic review protocol on the final day of the program.

Materials and Technical Requirements

A full agenda will be emailed in advance of the training. All course materials will be provided electronically 1–2 weeks before the course.

Required for all participants:

  • Computer or laptop with a camera.
  • Stable internet connection.
  • Speakers or headphones and a microphone.

Participants are responsible for providing their own training-related electronic equipment.

Application and Payment

The registration fee is CAD $1,575.00 (CAD $1,381.58 plus 14% HST of $193.42). The fee includes five days of instruction, JBI Reviewer Certification (subject to successful completion of all program requirements), a 12-month JBI SUMARI licence, and all electronic course materials.

    By submitting the registration form, applicants confirm their intention to attend. Subject to availability, an invoice will be issued shortly afterward.
  2. Payment (by credit card or journal entry) will be due by March 26, 2027.
    As spaces are limited, registration will be confirmed once payment has been received and verified by the organizing team.

Note: Graduate students should consult their faculty advisor/supervisor regarding registration and payment arrangements.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations received on or before March 29, 2027, are eligible for a refund, less a $75 administration fee. Cancellations received on or after March 30, 2027, are non-refundable.
