Research and Creativity

Praised for his virtuosity, broad versatility, improvisational skills, and dynamic stage presence, pianist Tom King has performed across Canada and abroad. He has studied with pianists including Stephane Lemelin, Andrew Tunis, John Hess, Anton Kuerti, Angela Cheng and Andre Laplante. He was a founding member of the Toronto-based Payadora Tango Ensemble, performs regularly with some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians, and was composer, performer and music producer for My Virtual Dream; an art/science installation combining neuroscience research at the Baycrest Rotman Research Institute with music and visual arts.

Tom has focused a great deal of his musical life on the balance and bridges between classical, jazz and popular music. As well being in demand as a collaborative pianist, vocal coach and teacher, he has worked as an orchestral pianist for the Edmonton Symphony, and has performed with acts such as the Pointer Sisters and Petula Clark. An accomplished jazz pianist, he has performed throughout Canada and Europe including performances at the Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal International Jazz Festivals as well as the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau, Germany.

Tom also spent time as a music director at the legendary Second City Toronto where he also completed as an actor, the Second City Training Centre Improvisation and Long-Form Improvisation Conservatory Programs.
