Gabriel O’Brien was born and raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received his early musical training as a boy chorister in Capella Regalis Men & Boys choir, and while in high school, became its Assistant Artistic Director and Probationers Programme Director. Gabriel was awarded an organ scholarship at the University of King’s College, where he completed a Bachelor of Music, specializing in Organ and Composition through Dalhousie University’s Fountain School of Performing Arts.

After completing his degree, Gabriel moved to York, UK, where he held two simultaneous positions as Director of Music at churches in the historic city centre: The Parish and Guild Church of All Saints, Pavement and St Helen’s, Stonegate.

Gabriel returned to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2025 to take up the position of Director of Music at the University of King’s College. In conjunction with his role at King’s, Gabriel is the organ instructor at the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie University.
