The 2022 Stanfield Conversation
“Technology, Media Fragmentation, and the Crisis of Democracy in America”
The 2022 Stanfield Conversation will take place at 7pm (ADT) on Thursday, October 20, 2022, within weeks of the US mid-term elections, providing an exceptional opportunity to engage with debates concerning the repercussions of new media and technology-enabled subversive practices for democratic politics. While the focus will be on the deepening crisis of democracy in America, the American experience must also be seen as both reflecting and shaping broader global trends. Because Canada has a unique degree of intimacy and vulnerability in its relations with the US, this year’s outstanding speakers bring diverse Canadian and American perspectives to bear on this critical nexus, including ways of responding to the challenges and threats it presents.
Join us (either virtually via livestream or in-person in the McInnes Room of the Dalhousie University Student Union Building) as we welcome speakers Dr. Kathleen Hall-Jamieson (University of Pennsylvania), Dr. Ron Diebert (University of Toronto), and Dr. Elizabeth Dubois (University of Ottawa) with guest moderator, Dal alum and host of CBC Information Morning, Portia Clark.
The Dalhousie Arts & Social Sciences Society, commonly referred to as DASSS, is a student-run faculty society that represents students in faculty affairs. This year, the society has the goal to increase student engagement and foster community within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
The newly relaunched DASSS is holding its Annual General Meeting to elect students to executive positions on Tuesday, September 27 at 7 PM in the Student Union Building Room 302. Come meet fellow FASS students, learn how to get involved in the faculty, or run for a position! Learn more on our Instagram: @dalartssociety.

MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance
All For One or One For All: Can Universal Health Care Meet the Needs of a Diverse Population?
Please join us for this panel discussion on Tuesday September 20 at 7 pm (ADT) in Theatre A of the Tupper Medical Building (5850 College Street) and streamed live on MS Teams.
This event is hosted by the MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance in partnership with Dalhousie's Faculty of Medicine. Visit the event website and the Facebook page for more information.
Many Canadians take pride in Canada’s universal health care, yet compared to other high-income countries, Canada ranks second to last in health equity. What are the blind spots in our day-to-day work that create and sustain health inequities? During times of crisis, such as the pandemic, what pressures and priorities led us to leave some people behind? This panel will explore the challenges and opportunities that exist to make a more inclusive health care system that works better for everyone.
The panelists:
Claire Betker, Scientific Director of the National Collaborating Centre for Determinants of Health (NCCDH)
Sharon Davis-Murdoch, Co-President of the Health Association of African Canadians
Dr. Lawrence Loh, Executive Director and CEO for the College of Family Physicians of Canada.
The event will be chaired by Dr. Barbara Hamilton-Hinch, Assistant Vice-Provost Equity and Inclusion, Dalhousie University.
The theme for the MacEachen Institute’s 2022-23 Policy Matters Speaker Series is “Health Care Reconsidered” and is presented in partnership with Dalhousie University's Faculty of Medicine.
