ENGL 2218 Gothic Fiction

This course examines a selection of gothic fiction from Horace Walpole onwards, and across national divisions, and may include such authors as Matthew Lewis, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, Bram Stoker, Shirley Jackson, and Richard Matheson. Topics to be considered may include the significance of supernatural figures (ghosts, fetches, vampires, and so on), narrative forms, the representation of terror, and the gothic as a vehicle of social critique.
