ENGL 2085 Video Games: Story, World and Play

Though wildly profitable, and uniquely poised to foster dialogue across and beyond borders, video games are often overlooked in post-secondary studies of the literary arts. In this course, students will engage established and emerging game genres to explore how story-telling, world-building, mechanics and play combine and compete to create culturally relevant texts. In this course, students will not only play games, but also engage contemporary game theory, film and short fiction as we consider the medium's relationship to other forms of art, and how the interactive nature of video games might bolster or limit their narrative power.
