On Thursday April 13th the CERC.OCEAN mobile laboratory container began its journey to St. John’s, Newfoundland where it will meet (and board) the R/V Celtic Explorer on April 26th to begin the A02 Go-Ship Cruise. This marks the first at-sea use of our mobile laboratory and the first time we’ve had to pack the container for shipment.
Before the container left, we had to strap down all of our boxes and any instruments that sit on top of the desks. This also meant strapping down computers and monitors, and making container-holders out of foam so nothing will move while the container is in transit (first by itself on its trip to St. John’s and then at sea when it will be used by our scientists).
Once everything in the container was secured we used the overhead crane in the container bay to lift the container over the other two containers staying at Dalhousie (for the time being) and onto a flat bed truck. Thankfully we strapped down everything in the container well and within 30 minutes it was on its way to board a ship headed for Newfoundland. Look below to see photos of the container headed out on its maiden voyage.
