United States Department of Defense research funding

The United States Department of Defense is offering several funding opportunities that are open to Canadian researchers.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Research Program

  • Pilot Clinical Trial Award: supports the implementation of clinical trials with the potential to impact on the treatment or management of ALS. $9.6M USD to fund approximately three applications. Pre-proposals due April 29, 2022
  • Clinical Biomarker Development Award: maximize clinical ALS resources and biorepositories to better define subtypes, assess prognosis, or predict therapeutic response and to improve value of clinical trials. Approximately $8.0M USD to fund approximately 10 applications. Pre-proposals due April 29, 2022
  • Therapeutic Idea Award: supports research ranging from validation of therapeutic leads through U.S. FDA IND-enabling studies. Approximately $4.8M USD to fund approximately three applications. Pre-proposals due April 29, 2022
  • Therapeutic Development Award: supports therapeutic development and ideas aimed at early-stage drug or treatment discovery. Approximately $13.6M USD to fund approximately 17 applications. Pre-proposals due April 29, 2022

Breast Cancer Research Program

  • Breakthrough Award Levels 1 and 2: support research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. Approximately $31.2M USD to fund approximately 19 applications. Letter of Intent due May 3, 2022
  • Breakthrough Award Level 3: support research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. Approximately $21.7M USD to fund approximately three applications. Pre-proposals due April 28, 2022
  • Breakthrough Award Level 4:  support research that has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. Approximately $15.5M USD to fund approximately one application. Pre-proposals due April 28, 2022
  • Era of Hope Scholar Award:  supports early career individuals who demonstrate potential to effect meaningful change in breast cancer. Approximately $9.3M USD to fund approximately two applications. Letter of Intent due May 3, 2022
  • Innovator Award: supports visionary individuals in any field including, but not limited to, breast cancer. Approximately $10.85M USD to fund approximately one application. Pre-proposals due April 28, 2022
  • Transformative Breast Cancer Consortium Award: support collaborations that will transform the lives of individuals with, and/or at risk for, breast cancer and will accelerate progress toward ending breast cancer. Approximately $38.75M USD to fund approximately one application. Pre-proposals due April 28, 2022

Lung Cancer Research Program

  • Career Development Award: supports early-career investigators under the mentorship of an experienced lung cancer researcher. Approximately $1.2M USD to fund approximately three applications. Letter of Intent due May 3, 2022
  • Concept Award: support research that will provide new insights, paradigms, technologies, or applications in lung cancer. Approximately $1.92M USD to fund approximately 2 Care Delivery and Health Disparity Concept Award applications and 10 Cancer Research Continuum Concept Award applications. Letter of Intent due May 3, 2022
  • Clinical Translational Research Partnership Award: supports partnerships that will accelerate ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Approximately $3.8M USD to fund approximately two applications. Letter of Intent due July 13, 2022
  • Idea Development Award: supports research that could accelerate progress toward eradicating deaths and suffering from lung cancer. Approximately $6.7M USD to fund approximately 12 applications. Pre-proposals due May 4, 2022
  • Investigator-Initiated Translational Research Award: supports research that will develop ideas in lung cancer into clinical applications. Approximately $3.8M USD to fund approximately four applications. Pre-proposals due May 4, 2022

Ovarian Cancer Research Program

  • Investigator - Initiated Research Award supports high-impact research that makes contributions to ovarian cancer or patient/survivor care. Approximately $13.44M USD to fund approximately 14 applications. Pre-proposals due May 2, 2022
  • Pilot Award: supports the exploration of innovative concepts or theories in ovarian cancer that that will drive the field forward. Approximately $5.6M USD to fund approximately 14 applications. Pre-proposals due May 2, 2022
  • Proteogenomics Research Award: supports the use of proteomics and/or genomics to explore new concepts or theories in ovarian cancer. Approximately $0.8M USD to fund approximately two applications. Pre-proposals due May 2, 2022
  • Ovarian Cancer Academy - Early Career Investigator Award: develop ovarian cancer researchers in research/career development environments. Approximately $3.48M USD to fund approximately three applications. Pre-proposals due May 2, 2022

  • Idea Development Award: Post-traumatic epilepsy research to improve quality of life. Approximately $1.44M to fund approximately three Level I IDA applications and $2.64M USD to fund approximately three Funding Level II IDA applications. Letter of Intent due May 19, 2022
  • Research Partnership Award: support new or existing collaborative research partnerships. Approximately $1.3M USD to fund approximately one application. Letter of Intent due May 19, 2022
  • Virtual Post-Traumatic Epilepsy Research Center Leadership Award: advance PTE research through development of early-career researchers. Approximately $2.0M USD to fund approximately one application. Letter of Intent due May 19, 2022
