Film Screening and Discussion of Mother Child Programs in Canada’s Prisons

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on February 10, 2020 in Events

Date: Thursday, Feb 27 from 6:30 - 9:00 pm
Location: Dal School of Law Weldon Building Rm 105

Around the world, mothers keep their children with them while incarcerated. In Canada, each of the federal prisons and one provincial jail have so-called Mother Child Programs. These programs are celebrated for supporting bonding and health, and criticized for attempting to humanize the inhumane prison system.

You are invited to a screening of Ombline, a gripping film by French director Stéphane Cazes that captures the experiences of a pregnant woman who is incarcerated and then keeps her child with her, followed by a discussion about the context in Canada. The audience will be joined by Brandy White, a WWW member, Elizabeth Fry Mainland Nova Scotia Staff member, and an expert on the experience of federal incarceration and motherhood.

A Partnership Event by Women's Wellness Within and NSPIRG.
