OERA New Research Call in Tidal Energy

Posted by Suman Jha on May 23, 2017 in Research Funding

Tidal energy research projects moving ahead

The Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia (OERA) is launching a new competitive research Call focused on tidal energy-related technology innovation.  A $1.25 million fund is available to support new projects that offer innovative and practical technology solutions and novel approaches to resolve fundamental knowledge gaps impacting the tidal sector.

There are three broad areas of research interest, specifically: ‘enhancements in environmental effects monitoring (EEM) technologies and approaches'; 'innovative approaches and improvements to marine operations'; and 'innovative cost reduction technologies'.  The scope for each theme area is purposefully broad, providing opportunity for a variety of expertise from different organizations, disciplines and specializations to come together to collaborate on innovative research.

The competition opens today.  Details on research scope, applicant eligibility, and how to apply are now available on the OERA website.  Researchers interested in applying to the Call are requested to complete the Expression of Interest (EOI) form and submit to the OERA by 4:00pm ADT on Monday 19 June 2017.

This funding demonstrates the sector’s continued commitment to scientific and technological innovation in developing tidal energy.  Ultimately, research is a critical element to helping to reduce the costs and risks for tidal energy, enabling it to become a vital part of Canada’s energy mix.

The Offshore Energy Research Association of Nova Scotia (OERA) is an independent, not-for-profit organization that funds and facilitates collaborative offshore energy and environmental research.  Their mission is to lead environmental, renewable and geoscience energy research that enables the sustainable development of Nova Scotia’s energy resources through strategic partnerships.  Since its establishment in 2006, the Association has invested over $32 million in research.
