Collective bargaining with CUPE 3912, representing Dalhousie Part-Time Academics, TAs, Markers and Demonstrators, has been ongoing since November of 2020. While the process has been taking place over an extended period of time, it has been collegial and productive, and the parties have agreed to several items that will benefit CUPE members.
In early February, the parties agreed that the negotiations had lost momentum and jointly agreed to file for conciliation.
The teams met this week for two days (March 31 and April 1) and continued talks with the help of an appointed conciliator. Some progress was made but ultimately the conciliator has concluded that an impasse has been reached. There is a process under the Trade Union Act that must be followed prior to any strike action.
Once the conciliator files their report, the parties have a fourteen-day cooling off period. During this period, the parties typically remain in contact and conversation. We remain hopeful that we can conclude these negotiations without any strike action.
