Clarification about Dalhousie's opening proposal to DFA and NSGEU Local 77 and Local 99

Although the university does not usually provide detailed updates during the collective bargaining process, it would like to clarify some information for the Dalhousie community.

Preliminary bargaining has begun with the Dalhousie Faculty Association (DFA), NSGEU Local 77 and NSGEU Local 99. The university provided the unions with an opening proposal and it remains hopeful to conclude negotations by the end of summer.

in light of the uncertainty created by COVID-19, the university is now faced with a $30.5 million deficit this year. A number of cost-saving measures are being considered.

  • The possibility of a salary rollback, as well as reforms to the Dalhousie Pension Plan, are part of the proposals the university has put forward as measures to address the financial impacts of COVID-19 in a manner that limits the need for staff reductions.
  • The university has made a commitment to the unions that any salary adjustments that are agreed between Dalhousie and its unions will be applied universally across all employees of Dalhousie, including senior administration.

By working together, Dalhousie can emerge from this challenging time as a stronger, better university.
