Helping students pay for their health services

Student reviewing form in the Student Health & Wellness Centre waiting room

To help students pay for the health and wellness services they need, Dalhousie offers two different health plans through Student VIP: the DSU Health & Dental Plan and the Dalhousie International Health Plan.

Every Dalhousie student must have health insurance coverage. This includes undergraduate, graduate and international students. Most Dalhousie students are automatically enrolled into one or both health plans during the Fall Term depending on their enrollment status and registration at Dalhousie in September.

Opt-in or opt-out of the 2023-24 health plans

The DSU Health Plan Policy Year runs from the 1st of September until the 31st of August, each year. Students starting in September who are taking three, full-credit, hour courses are automatically enrolled in the DSU Extended Health and Dental Plan offered at Dalhousie and this fee is included in their tuition. International Students registered at Dalhousie are also automatically enrolled in the primary International Student Health Insurance Plan, with this fee also being included in their tuition.

The opt-in period for students beginning their studies for the 2024 Summer term begins April 15, 2024.

PLEASE NOTE: Only students whose studies are beginning in the summer term are eligible to opt-into the health plans offered at Dalhousie during the summer term enrollment period.

Students are able to opt themselves, and family, in and out of the plans offered by Dalhousie and the DSU during the opt-out period in which their studies begin, each policy year.

Students with MSI coverage are able to opt-out of the DSU International Health Plan whenever they become eligible for this provincial plan. Students with private coverage can only opt-out from their International Health Plan during the enrollment period in which their studies begin each policy year, and their private coverage must meet the requirements available at DSU.ca/health-plan.

Full-time students whose studies begin in the Winter or Spring Term are joining the policy during the plan year and must opt-into the Health and Dental Plan if they want this coverage. Part-time, Distance study, exchange or co-op, students in the Fall Term must opt-into the Health and Dental plan as they are not automatically enrolled. Opt-ins will be available at www.studentvip.ca/dsu during the enrollment period for each term.

Opt-ins and outs are completed online at www.studentvip.ca/dsu. Please reach out to dsuhlth@dal.ca if you have any questions.
