Summer 2019 Research Update
By Dr. Derek Rutherford
Physiotherapy faculty researchers have been engaged locally, nationally and internationally over the past few months in research endeavours that have brought significant recognition to the work being conducted in the School of Physiotherapy. Below is a list of research outputs accumulated since the last newsletter, but what you won’t necessarily see are the many research related elements going on behind the scenes.
First, we celebrated our 35th Annual Physiotherapy Student Research Day; a great time where students, faculty and clinicians interact and think about possibilities and evidence contributions to support our profession into the future.
Secondly, Dr. Rebecca Moyer is one step closer to having research infrastructure up and running in the Dynamics of Human Motion Laboratory, supported by the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), Nova Scotia Research and Innovation Trust and the Dalhousie University, School of Physiotherapy Annual giving fund. Dr. Moyer's work is already gaining international recognition. For a 6 week internship, Dr. Moyer and Dr. Cheryl Hubley-Kozey supervised Phd student, Barry McDermott, who sought out Dr. Moyer for her expertise in musculoskeletal imaging and osteoarthritis management. Thirdly, we are welcoming back Dr. Marilyn MacKay-Lyons from her sabbatical, and are looking forward to hearing how she has advanced her work in the areas of stroke rehabilitation and aerobic exercise.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge Dr. Shaun Boe for his persistence and tact in advancing research forward not only for the School of Physiotherapy though the Laboratory for Brain Recovery and Function, but now through the Faculty of Health through his recent appointment to Associate Dean of Research. Congratulations!
