The FASS monthly e-newsletter: Year-End edition (Spring 2023)

Message from the Dean

To our FASS students, faculty, and staff:

You have made it through a long and tough year, bookended by devastating natural disasters in the form of hurricanes and wildfires and the need to remain vigilant and masked in teaching spaces. Despite these continued challenges, FASS has shown itself to be a thriving and vital community that houses pioneering programs, including the Black and African Diaspora Studies (BAFD) Majors and Honours program which begins in the fall of 2023, pending final approval by the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission, and this fall we'll see the second offering of the ASSC 1300 and 1400 classes, which introduce first-year FASS students to the Humanities and Social Sciences in innovative and thoughtful ways.

First and foremost, congratulations to the amazing FASS spring 2023 graduating class, who celebrated their convocation on Tuesday, June 6th and included among their cohort a 92-year-old MA graduate Marie Jones! I am delighted to see you take your place in the world and would ask that you please keep in touch and let us know how you are doing, as you become graduates and alumni of the faculty.

The 2022-2023 academic year has been an incredibly busy one for faculty, staff, and students, as FASS had a dynamic presence at the first in-person Dalhousie Open House since 2019 and hosted several incredible lecture events, among them the 2022 Stanfield Conversation on Digital Democracy, the inaugural lecture by the Spatz Chair in Jewish Studies, Dr. Eva Mroczek, and the annual Shaar Shalom Lecture at Dalhousie, that featured a moderated discussion between The Honourable Lieutenant-General (ret) Roméo Dallaire and the Honourable Bob Rae. The Fountain School of Performing Arts feted the opening of the Joseph Strug Hall with an extraordinary recital and had a full roster of events from operas to theatrical performances and concerts, which demonstrate the depth and breadth of their talented students, faculty, and staff. FASS held celebrations for student, staff and faculty award winners (learn more under the Dean's Office announcements below). And I attended a wide array of events that honoured excellence in a variety of programs and departments, particularly as the year ended.

I hope that your time at Dalhousie is special and remains both memorable and positive. For those who are returning, see you in September of 2023!

Sincerely,
Dr. Jennifer Andrews
Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

2023 Clan Ramsey of Nova Scotia Prize Winner

This prize is awarded to a student registered in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences who has written the best paper dealing with any aspect of the influence of Scottish culture within Canada.

The paper follows Jaida's process and reflections on creating a highland-style kilt from scratch.
