Contemplative Action for Social Change: Exploring the Myths and Harms of Race

Workshop led by Dr. Damita Brown, with Barry Boyce

Friday evening, November 18 at 7:00 and Saturday, November 19 from 9:30-5:30

Atlantic School of Theology President’s Lodge, 660 Francklyn St., Halifax

During this workshop you will:

• Share healing and supportive space to engage tough questions about race and social transformation

• Strengthen your anti-racism using a contemplative framework

• Identify and work through obstacles in your anti-racism

• Leave feeling connected to your power

Surrounding the Work with Gentleness

In order to surround this difficult work with gentleness and openness, we encourage participants to engage in meditation practice daily —before, during, and after the workshop. You can join us online on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 12:00 noon (via Zoom) to receive basic meditation instruction from Damita. At that time, Barry will interview Damita about her work and what to expect at the workshop.

Cost: $115 requested. For more information or to register, email coordinator Michael Speraw at: contemplativeactionhfx@gmail.com

Damita Brown, PhD is a Madison, WI based activist, writer and workshop leader. She prioritizes work that brings contemplative practices and transformative action together. Brown’s research has focused on integrative analyses of race, class, gender and other categories. Her workshops offer supportive yet challenging space for us to liberate identity from the toxic traps and harmful norms of white supremacist culture. A longtime meditator and student of Buddhism, Damita helps participants gain deeper understanding of the role of inner friendship in dismantling egotism, us-versus-them narratives and aggression. In 2017 she developed the Community Lab for Intentional Practice (CLIP) approach for anti-racist community building.

Barry Boyce co-founded Mindful magazine, mindful.org, and the Foundation for a Mindful Society in 2013 to help bring mindfulness into as many everyday contexts as possible A longtime meditation practitioner and teacher—as well as a professional writer and editor—he is the editor of and primary contributor to The Mindfulness Revolution: Leading Psychologists, Scientists, Artists, and Meditation Teachers on the Power of Mindfulness in Daily Life. He is also co-founder of the Profound Treasury Retreat, a nine-day residential Buddhist retreat.
