Accommodation & Meals

Students of the Summer Institute on Migration and Identity have the opportunity to stay on campus in a Dalhousie residence.  A block of single rooms is being held at Risley Hall at a nightly student rate of $45.00 (+ 18% taxes).  A deposit will be required at the time of booking with the balance due on arrival.

See below for details -- and make sure you follow up soon if interested, as the number of rooms is limited.  Feel free to contact jmeuce@dal.ca with any questions.  You also have the option to find your own accommodation, although we regret that we do not have the resources to assist with such arrangements.

Location

Located at 1233 LeMarchant Street at the heart of Dal's Studley Campus, Risley Hall is near the Killam Library, Student Union Building and Dalplex sports centre, which residence guests are allowed to use.  Participants of the Summer Institute can walk to Pier 21 in about 30 minutes or hop on a nearby bus.  (Guidance will be provided on the first day to ensure everyone knows how to get there.) The residence is also on a bus route to/within walking distance of Halifax's Spring Garden Road shopping and dining district and the waterfront.

Rooms

Risley Hall is a traditional residence with student-style rooms featuring a single bed, desk, sink and free wireless internet.  Washrooms are shared and co-ed (i.e. all-gendered), with access from the corridors, but they contain individual, private stalls for baths, lavatories and showers.  Each level of the residence has a communal kitchen and a lounge with cable television, as well as coin-operated laundry facilities.  Access to the building is card-operated and there is a 24-hour front desk, with a staff member always on duty to provide assistance.  Like the rest of Dalhousie, Risley Hall is a non-smoking facility

Meals

Students are responsible for their own meals.  For those wanting to prepare their own food, the kitchens in Risley have a stove, fridge, sink and microwave (although they may not be equipped with utensils/crockery/cutlery).  For ingredients and supplies, the closest supermarkets are a 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride and there are small corner shops literally around the corner!

For anyone wanting cafeteria food, the dining hall at Dalhousie’s Shirreff Hall will be open during the course for buffet-style breakfast ($11.13 + 15% tax), lunch ($13.09 + 15%) and supper ($18.35 + 15%).  It is just down the road from Risley on South Street, a few minutes on foot, and there is no need to book ahead.  You can pay cash at the door or else pre-pay with Event & Conference Services.

There should also be other food options and outlets open at Dal over the summer.  Details will be added to this site nearer the time.
