PhD program

An overview of our PhD program

Our PhDs can choose one of two streams – either Information and Communications or Energy.

Information and Communications trainees can then specialize further within photonic devices for telecommunications and information processing, while Energy trainees can specialize within photonic plasmonics for light collection, sensing and generation.

Meanwhile, you’ll also be exposed to – and actively participate in – other related fields and disciplines in order to build knowledge and experience outside your own research. You’ll do this by:

  • Taking classes from other areas (engineering, physics, biomedical, etc.)

  • Taking new courses developed specifically for this program – see below

  • Spending time at the research institutes program partners

  • Spending extended periods in participating companies to build your knowledge of an experience with industrial design, development, testing, production, commercialization, pricing and marketing.

New courses

Subjects specifically suited to our PhDs:

  • Advances in solar and energy materials

  • Engineering applications of photonics

  • Computational photonics

  • Fundamentals of non-linear photonics

  • Optical experimental techniques.
