Radiocarbon Dating Using A Proportional Counter Filled With Carbon Dioxide

(PDF - 18.8 Mb)

R.A.G. Lines(l) established the radio-carbon dating laboratory at its present location in the Sir James Dunn building.

He left three unsolved problems.

(a) The bubbers used in the purification of the carbon dioxide caused solutions to overflow into the system.
(b) There were spurious counts from the pre-amplifier.
(c) He found the residual background count from the shielded proportional counter to be too high.

The solutions to there difficulties are discussed in this paper.
