Starting in '36, Nordau proceeded to breeze through the B.Sc. course, majoring in Geology and received the Governor General's Medal in '40. Nordau played intermediate football and was an active member of Tau Epsilon Phi Fraternity. In '41 he interupted his studies to go into the R.C.A.S.C. This year he returned to continue his studies for an M.Sc. and was chosen as the Rhodes Scholar for Nova Scotia. Generous and with a good sense of humour, next year he will be Oxford's again.

Obituary

GOODMAN, Dr. Nordau R. - 84, New Glasgow and Halifax, died July 17, 2003, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, after a long battle with ALS.

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of Clara and Harry Goodman and was the last remaining member of his immediate family. An academic and scientist by training, he had a lifelong passion for service to both community and country. He interrupted his education at Dalhousie University to serve overseas during the Second World War from 1942-1945 as an officer with the RCASC in England, France and Belgium, concluding with the rank of Captain at the end of the war. He returned to Dalhousie to complete his M.Sc. and was then selected as a Rhodes Scholar and obtained his doctorate at Oxford University. He taught geology and mineralogy at Oxford, St. Francis Xavier and as an Associate Professor at Dalhousie. In addition to teaching, he was an executive of the Goodman Company and a consultant geologist specializing in salt and gypsum deposits in Nova Scotia and other parts of Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe.

A community leader in Pictou County, he served at various times as President or Chairman of the New Glasgow Rotary Club, the initial YMCA Fund Raising Campaign, the United Appeal and the Festival of the Tartans. He also was a Boy Scout leader for a number of years with the 12th New Glasgow Troop. He was the first President of the Pictou County Research and Development Commission (PICORD) and a member of Thorburn Mining and NOVACO during their active period of interest in surface coal. He was a member of Shaar Shalom Synagogue, Royal Canadian Legion, Scotia Branch and served at various times as President and Treasurer of the Veterans Council at the Camp Hill VMB.

He is survived by his wife, Valborg (von Linstow); son, Lars; granddaughters, Alexandra and Maria; daughter, Kirsten (Rogers) and husband Laurie; grandchildren, Gregory and Julia; son, George and wife Kim; granddaughter, Miranda. He was predeceased by his son, Philip; sister, Frances; brothers, Hy, Waldo, and Bernie.

There will be a private family Committal Service in Heatherdale Memorial Gardens followed by a reception for friends of the family at the Royal Canadian Legion, Normandy Branch, Provost Street, New Glasgow, on Tuesday, July 22, from 3-5 p.m. No flowers by request.
