Opportunities in Computer Science Education

We are pleased to announce the availability of the Computing Education Conference Travel Award for upcoming meetings that strives to advance knowledge about education. This award is designed to provide financial support for graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty (teaching and/or research stream) members who are interested in attending the conference but may face financial constraints.

ACM SIGCSE sponsored events include but are not necessarily limited to:

• SIGCSE Technical Symposium
• Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education (ITiCSE) Conference
• International Computing Education Research (ICER) Workshop
• SIGCSE Global Computing Education Conference (CompEd)

The selection committee will consider venues other than those listed above as well as any requests to cover the cost of registration to virtual tracks for computing education conferences.

The Computing Education Conference Travel Award will cover the cost of conference registration, accommodation, and travel expenses up to a maximum of $3,000. The award is open to all eligible applicants affiliated with the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University.

Award announcement

All applicants will be notified of the committee's decision by Friday, October 6, 2023. Recipients of the Computing Education Travel Award will be required to submit a brief report summarizing their conference experience and how it contributed to their academic and research goals.

Please note that to be eligible for this round of funding travel must be started and completed between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024. Applicants may opt to attend an online conference, and multiple awards may be given when feasible. The funds must be spent over a period of 12 months upon receipt of acceptance of the award.

The field of computing education is constantly evolving and the demand for skilled professionals continues to grow. To help meet this demand, we are pleased to announce the Open Educational Resource in Computing Education Grant.

This grant is designed to support the development of high-quality open educational resources (OER) that can be used by instructors and students in computing education programs in the Faculty of Computer Science. We are looking for proposals that focus on innovative approaches to teaching computing concepts and skills, as well as those that address gaps in existing OER.

Eligibility

This grant is open to individuals or teams who are actively involved in computing education. This includes, but is not limited to, faculty members (teaching and/or research stream), researchers, instructional designers, and education technology specialists. Applicants must be affiliated with the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Stephanie Bernier (sbernier@dal.ca) to coordinate with the CSEd team throughout the completion of the project.

Grant amount

The grant will provide up to $8,000 in funding to support the development of an OER in computing education. The funding can be used to cover costs associated with the development, production, and dissemination of the OER.

Application process

To apply for this grant, interested applicants must submit a proposal of no more than 2,500 words that includes the following:

• A description of the proposed OER, including its intended audience, topics covered, and pedagogical approach.
• A detailed project plan that outlines the development timeline, milestones, and deliverables.
• A budget that outlines how the grant funds will be used, including any additional funding or in-kind support.
• A brief biography of the applicant(s), highlighting their qualifications and experience in computing education.

Deadline

Evaluation criteria

Proposals will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Alignment with the goals of the grant.
• Potential impact on computing education, including the ability to address gaps in existing OER.
• Clarity and feasibility of the project plan and budget.
• Qualifications and experience of the applicant(s).

All interested applicants are welcome to explain how they addressed the feedback from committee members during the resubmission of a proposal.

Award announcement

The grant recipient(s) will be announced by Monday, February 3, 2024. Applicants will be required to submit a brief report summarizing their experience and how it contributed to their academic and research goals. The funds must be spent over a period of 18 months upon receipt of acceptance of the award.

This includes, but is not limited to, faculty members (teaching and/or research stream), researchers, instructional designers, and education technology specialists. Applicants must be affiliated with the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact Stephanie Bernier (sbernier@dal.ca) to coordinate with the CSEd team throughout the completion of the project as well as Eric Poitras (eric.poitras@dal.ca) for assistance in applying for ethics research board approval.

The grant award will provide up to $8,000 in funding to support research expenses, travel costs, and other relevant expenses related to the proposed project.

Application process

To apply for this grant award, interested applicants must submit a proposal of no more than 2,500 words that includes the following:

• A clear research question and objectives
• A brief literature review related to the proposed research
• Methodology and data collection techniques
• A timeline for the proposed project
• A detailed budget outlining how the grant funds will be used
• A brief explanation of how the proposed project will contribute to the field of computing education and teaching practices
• A budget that outlines how the grant funds will be used, including any additional funding or in-kind support.
• A brief biography of the applicant(s), highlighting their qualifications and experience in computing education.
