ENGL 3099‑CRWR 3020 Creative Writing: Fiction I
This course is designed for students who want to develop their fiction writing skills. The emphasis will be on short stories and classes will incorporate some literature although the primary focus will be on the process of writing. The course will cover the following topics:
1. Journal writing as a source for fiction
2. Generating Creativity
3. The Nature of Fiction
4. Setting
5. Character Development
6. Plot and Conflict
7. Structure
8. Point of View
9. Voice and style
10. Dialogue
11. Revision
12. Inspiration and Discipline
13. The Editing Process
14. Getting Published
There will be invited guests: published fiction writers and editors. Classroom discussion is encouraged and part of the course will be reserved for student presentation of short fiction and commentary.
