Research / Practice Interests

Susan Fitzgerald is the design director of FBM and an associate professor at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Architecture and Planning. Her design work has been the recipient of many accolades, including the Canada Council for the Arts' Professional Prix de Rome, Governor General’s Medals in Architecture, Canadian Architect Awards, Wood Design Awards, International Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum, Lieutenant Governor Awards including Medals of Excellence, and the EnRoute Air Canada Award. She is the holder of multiple industry and Social Science and Humanities Research Council grants investigating the hidden social dimensions of infrastructure, modular mass timber, affordable housing, and the spatial justice of school design. Her work has been featured at the Venice Biennale, the Lisbon Triennale, and the World Congress of Architects, and her writing published by UCL Press (2023), Routledge Press (2022), among others. Susan was appointed a Fellow of the RAIC in 2015 and awarded Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal for service to architecture in 2022.
