Teaching

I am privileged to have the opportunity to introduce students to Sociology and Psychology, two fields of study that are relevant to everyone, no matter what program they are in and what life path they pursue. If you are thinking about taking any of the courses I teach and want more information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Please note that students are allowed to take Sociology II without having taken Sociology I and Psychology II without having taken Psychology I.

Introductory Sociology I and II provide students with an overview of how society impacts individual behaviour. Introductory Sociology I is focused on having students better understand how society impacts their own personal lives. The first half of the course examines theories that explain how an individual develops and takes on the norms and values of the society to which s/he belongs. The second half of the course examines major social institutions and how their structure impacts individual citizens. Sociology II uses a sociological lens to examine contemporary societal issues, particularly those related to agriculture, rurality, and conservation.

Introductory Psychology I and II provide students with an overview of the many factors that influence human behaviour. Psychology focuses primarily on individual factors from a variety of perspectives to describe and explain human behaviour. Although classes rely primarily on the lecture method to convey information, I try to make sure that most classes also include demonstrations or class activities to illustrate and clarify the information presented.

I also teach an online course entitled, "Issues in Agricultural Health and Safety". In this course, a health behaviour perspective is taken to understand the factors that influence farmers' decisions and actions pertaining to farm health and safety.  Ways to reduce the risk of injury and illness from agricultural activities are also explored.
