NSERC Innovate Joint research call: National Science Foundation Global Centres

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on March 25, 2024 in Research Funding

The Government of Canada, through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), is pleased to join efforts with international partners to take part in the inaugural Global Centres initiative, led by the US National Science Foundation (NSF), to encourage and support international and collaborative research on the bioeconomy.

Global Centres proposals should be focused on cutting-edge, interdisciplinary, and use-inspired research on the bioeconomy with international collaborations that foster breakthroughs in knowledge. NSF Global Centres grants will support the creation of international hubs of research excellence that advance knowledge, empower communities, and generate discovery and innovative solutions at a regional and/or global scale.

NSERC and SSHRC welcome the involvement of Indigenous Peoples, their uniquely valuable connection to Canada’s ecology, and their incorporation of traditional Indigenous knowledge in research.

The 2024 initiative will only fund Center Implementation awards in this competition, subject to the availability of appropriated funds. No Design awards will be funded.

Through a lead agency model, the US Principal Investigator (PI) will submit a single collaborative proposal on behalf of the research team, which will undergo a review process by NSF, the lead agency. In parallel, the participating Canadian researchers on the team must submit one application to NSERC. Please refer to the Apply section for full details.

Funding:

Up to CAN $500,000 per year over 4 to 5 years.

Please visit the NSERC website for further details, and consult the Global Centres Program Solicitation for complete details and guidelines.
