Open Science principles gain recognition

Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on November 29, 2021 in Announcements

The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), whose membership includes the 29 largest Canadian university libraries including Dalhousie Libraries, has endorsed the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science.

The endorsement was made after the recommendation was unanimously adopted by the UNESCO Science Commission on November 16, 2021, and then formally adopted at the full UNESCO General Conference.

CARL notes that the UNESCO recommendation is a milestone in the advancement of open science and the promotion of the principles of bibliodiversity and equity. More specifically, they assert that open science/open scholarship allows more research from the same data, reduces duplication costs and increases the social impact and circulation of scientific findings.
