Posted by Jaq-Lin Larder on June 25, 2018 in Research Funding

Global Affairs Canada recently launched a new Faculty Mobility Program, which provides Canadian faculty with short-term opportunities to teach or conduct research in Latin Americas and the Caribbean, at the college, undergraduate and graduate levels.

The Faculty Mobility Program aims to increase the number of institutional collaborations and student exchange agreements between Canadian and foreign institutions eligible under the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP). These agreements are created between colleges, technical or vocational institutions and universities in Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Faculty scholarship recipients must teach or conduct research in the following eligible ELAP countries:

  • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos;
  • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama;
  • North America: Mexico; or
  • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela.

The maximum grant value per faculty member is $7,000. The duration of the scholarship is for three (3) weeks minimum and eight (8) maximum (participant can stay longer, with support of funds from other sources).  Canadian institutions will disburse funds to the faculty recipient to contribute to the following costs:

  • Transportation (economy fare, by the most direct route);
  • Lodging, meals, incentives (according to Treasury Board guidelines);
  • Insurance costs; and
  • Expenditures related to securing visas or work permits.

Recipients must be full-time faculty from Canadian institutions (part-time professors and lecturers are not eligible). Host institutions must be at the college level and above and be recognized by local authorities. Host institutions must provide an invitation letter stipulating that they support the research project and/or that any course(s) to be taught will effectively be scheduled.

More information is available on the Government of Canada International Scholarships site.

Any faculty member interested in this opportunity is asked to contact the International Research Manager in Dalhousie Research Services (jennifer.morawiecki@dal.ca) for more information and support in preparing an application. Note that all applications are to be submitted by institutions on behalf of faculty candidates, and DRS staff will facilitate this process.
